Help Refugees Via Our Partner Organisations: training 22nd April

Talk English We are pleased to be working with two local organisations through which you can provide help: Talk English seeks volunteers to teach learners on Talk English Courses and help people to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; Sanctuary Hosting matches homeless asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants to people in the community with spare rooms and open hearts, to stay with them rent free, and is running an important training session in MK on 22nd April, as described in the second section below.

Talk English

Talk English helps ‘beginners’ to improve their listening, reading and writing skills in English. Funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government, it is currently recruiting 125 volunteers for training courses starting in April. If you would like to help people learn the language, access services and become involved in their community, please contact:

Helen Martin, ESOL Curriculum Development Organiser, CLMK 01908 556743 or Milton Keynes College 01908 684444. Or you can email (using ‘Talk English’ as the subject): communitylearning.mk@miltonkeynes.gov.uk or info@mkcollege.ac.uk

For more information see the link to (or search for) ‘Talk English’ at www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/clmk or www.mkcollege.ac.uk . A general overview is provided at www.talk-english.co.uk.

The Talk English project seeks community venues to host the classes once a week for 2½ hours . The venues would need to accommodate at least 10 adults, with tables and chairs, ideally have WiFi installed or computers for learners to use. An interactive whiteboard would be a bonus. Some payment could be afforded but, because the budget is limited, free use of the room would be appreciated.

Sanctuary Hosting

Sanctuary Hosting matches homeless asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants to people in the community with spare rooms and open hearts, to stay with them rent free. Sanctuary Hosting will be running a training session (for prospective Volunteer Hosts as well as Support workers who work to ensure the hosting process goes well) on Saturday 22nd April 2017, 11am to 4pm at the offices of the British Red Cross, Unit 3 Joplin Court Sovereign Business Park Crownhill, Milton Keynes.
